NEW YORK (JTA) — An Orthodox group is calling for better training after a commercial flight was diverted when a passenger’s tefillin were mistaken for a bomb. Tefillin are biblical in origin, and are commanded within the context of several laws outlining a Jew’s relationship to God. Tefillin vary in quality, the way they are made, and in their halachic desirability. Tefillin are worn each weekday morning, but not on the Sabbath or on most Jewish holidays.
